Default Need to Program Keys (or the car) 2001 1.8T A4Q

Hi all
Recently I lost my last a4 key (with the remote).
I ordered two more from the dealer who did the programming and they worked.
Then I found the old key and tried to program that by using the following method:
turn car on but not running.
put non programmed key in driver door
turn and hold at unlock position
push the lock and unlock buttons
et voila..... no keys work now.

Can any one see what I am doing wrong?
If there is another way please let me know what it is.
Can this be done by a user?

Is the dealer the only one who can do this?

Thanks
Barry

Default tks

I'll try again but i did it 3 times. the same way. lol
i only tried to do 2 keys but now none works.
does it matter if you press lock or unlock or do you need to press both? (doesn't make sense to me).

does it matte which key u use to turn the car on? I used a then working key since I assumed the one i put in the door would be programmed.
What do you think?

Cool To Progrem a B5 A4 1.8 2001.5 Q Key

The process is relatively simple as long as you have one key that works.
Unfortunately the instructions I found in Google somehow lead me astray and it didn't work the first 3 times i tried. Problaly my problem.
I ended up trying all combinations of what I thought the instructions worked eventually.
Here are the instructions as best i remember them.
1 Insert your good key in the ignition and turn the car to on, not running. Most dash idiot lights come on.
2 Get out of the car and close the door (or maybe leave it open)
3 insert new key in driver door lock.
4 turn it to the lock position and hold it there, (clockwise). This is where i thought the original iinstructions said to to go to the unlock (counter clockwise) position.
5 are you still holding the key in that position??? good
6 now press the LOCK button, the lights wll flash. If it doesn't then push the unlock button. If that doesn't work try them both together.

I think the sequence I suggest first in each step is correct, (or not)
Give it a try. it will work eventually.

Default one more thing

You can prolly program a second key, but it is unlikely you can get a key from ebay since the physical key pare is rather unique.
Good Luck
