New member looking at some B5 A4's
Im not sure if this is the right place to post this, but hopefully its alright.
So im obviously new to the forums, but i have been looking through here quite a bit because sometime in the near future i am planning on buying a second car and i really want it to be an A4. I went and test drove a 1996 manual 2.8 quattro today and pretty much fell in love with it. I currently own a 97 Chevy Blazer, which is my baby so im not getting rid of it, i just want something else that is a little sportier and gets better gas mileage. Ive built Blazer quite a bit so now it does 0-60 in about 8.2 seconds, so its fun to drive but i want a car.
So anyways, even though the 96 2.8 is the 12 valve version it still had a lot of power and was fun to drive, I think im going to look for a 98+ with the 30 valve and more power. Or maybe the 1.8t if i can find one that just had its timing belt replaced recently, or has lowish miles. This 96 had 170k miles on it with no maintenance records so, the first thing i would do is replace the timing belt. I have heard to many horror stories about them going out to not worry about replacing it.
So a couple questions: Im not sure of this is normal, but on this car you had to let the clutch pedal almost all the way out before it would engage, but once it did, it engaged solid and strong.
Also it was throwing a PCM code, i dont remember what the number was but i think it just said powertrain control module. Is that fairly common? if i had the code i would look it up on here cuz im sure its covered pretty well but i dont.
So I guess what kind of things should i look for before i decide to buy one? besides the obvious clutch, check engine lights, and the CV's if its a quattro.
Thanks for any and all help! i hope to be an Audi owner soon!
(sorry for the book of a post)
Edit: Oh i thought of a couple more questions lol... I thought i would state my future plans for my future A4.
I think the first thing i would do is lower it probably 2 inches, or what ever kit comes close to that (i havent looked at any of them yet) and if i get a black one i think i would murder it out, or leave chrome rims. I have no clue what size tires and rims i can get away with, so ill have to do some more research there. i also dont want to stretch the fenders, i think that looks stupid.
This is the stance i want.. i know this person has wider tires in the back than the front, not sure by how much tho.

Or something like this:

Two very sexy A4's there. those are my two idol cars haha

Judging by your posts regarding maintenance, it seems like you know what you're doing, but you may want to look into the FAQ: https://www.audiforums.com/forum/b5-...%2A%2A-109459/
The 2.8 motor has basically no aftermarket/mod following. If you want to make over 200 CHP, you'll want to look at modifying the 1.8T, or the S4's 2.7TT. Of course if you find a quattro version, you have to take into account the extra drivetrain loss
Both of the B5's in the photos you posted are 1.8Ts

And quattro > FWD unless you're really looking to save gas and don't drive fast in the rain/snow
