Well....I am new here...just picked up a '98 A4 2.8 auto quattro w/80k on it for the wife.
I am new to Audi....any thing I should look out for on these or do as pre maintenance?????
I am actually thinking of finding another one for myself....driving hers brought back memories of my VW GTI's....after driving trucks for the last ten yrs have helped out my driving record although.

I did some searching already for some mods..but find little...I would be looking for exhaust,intake,programming....not much, just to get a little more power out of it.The only thing I have done to it is get rid of the horrible continental tires that came on it with some perelli p4's..... it is like night and day difference

Thanks in advance for the help.Sooner or later I might be able to help out on here......we will see how big my learning curve is.....jamming Audi stuff in with my Ford diesel stuff and my Toyota(our play toy rock crawler...'86 4runner)....might have to start logging some of this stuff down.

Ron

Welcome!

Most of the maintenance related stuff you need to know is in the stickies at the top of the forum, they're extremely helpful. Sounds like you've got a lot on your plate, make sure you always have a little extra money stashed away in case something blows up. The 2.8 is very reliable, more so that the 1.8turbo, so you shouldn't have tooooo much to worry about.

on the same note the 1.8 has a lot more for performance upgrades.

Damn, son! That's a good find! My 98 2.8 came with 136xxx.

That said, welcome to the forum and the brand. As CCA4 said, check the stickies for advice on maintenance. Loads of useful info can be found there, everything from what to look for when buying another B5 (as you did mention you might look for one yourself) as well as what to do about pre-existing/potential problems. If you have an issue not covered in the stickies, post it up, you'll probably get all the info you need and then some to take care of the problem.

As far as power upgrades, you're looking at slim pickin's for a 2.8. Judging from your OP, you've done some research on this and what you found is about all there is unless you've got about 6 grand for a custom turbo setup or a PES G2 supercharger kit. A chip and an exhaust will get you some, but not a whole lot to brag about; 20-30 HP if you're lucky.

Other than that, again welcome to the forum and to the elite group of German engineering

I have done a little research....but I am sure I will have alot more in the future......I was in between a VW TDI a 1.8t and this one...after reading about timing belt stories I went with the 2.8.
It was owned by an elderly lady, all maintenance done at the dealer....and picked it up for $5500.....I think I got a good deal, even dropping 500 on tires on the first day.
But I did find out I get to take wrenches to it this weekend......wiper fluid leaking behind the bumper on pass side(guessing from the headlight washer).

fun is not the word....amazing how much you put into it to go as slow as you can and not break anything.....but we have been places that we could have not made it there on foot.

On the Audi note I got the washer fluid leak fixed....just plugged the line to the headlight washers(after reading a few threads that seams to be the easy fix)...but had a CEL light last night, getting that read today to see what it is.

My fav pic....dont think the Audi would have enough clearance LOL

You got more than a good deal bro, you practically stole that! Given that blue book value on that car with that few of miles is between $7000 and $8000, I'd definitely say you got far more than a good deal, even with the $500 extra on new tread. Also considering $5500 is what I paid for mine with 136xxx on it and a few problems that need to be taken care of (control arm replacement, leaking radiator temp sensor, jacked up secondary air pump plus loads of small scratches and a less than functional keyfob) I'd say either I got shafted or you got really lucky haha

Either way, congrats man, always good to get a good deal on something nice.
