newbie: Buy 140k miles,1996 A4?

<DIV>The guy is selling me his black a4 with 140,000 miles for $5000.</DIV>
<DIV>He said it needs tires, breaks, oil change. He cant remember if the timing belt is done (aka: maybe never?).</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Carfax looks clean.</DIV>
<DIV>Would it be a good idea to get it? Or is he selling a junker?</DIV>
<DIV>Are a4's any good with this much milage??</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Thanks!</DIV>

I'd be carefull. The timing belt needs done ASAP, its like a time bomb waiting to explode. A dealer will charge you around 1k to change it, and a independant shop will charge around 500-600 bucks. If you are new to Audi's just keep in mind they are not Honda's. They usually have a lot of little problems that can become annoying. If you are good mechanically it won't be a big deal. The 12v engine is a solid one, i'm kind of partial to it.<IMG src=smileys/smiley1.gif border="0"><edited><editID>Jestnomen</editID><editDate>38078.8972685185</editDate></edited>

A4's can go a lot of mileage if they have had proper maintenance. If this one has not been taken care of then you will see problems.

The Timing belt and tensioner would have to be changed immediately. And I mean it. If it breaks you have a $3-4K engine rebuild. Is it a 1,8t or a 2.8? Is it quattro?

Brakes will be $50-$100 bucks for pads (about $150-$200 more for front and rear rotors). Al depends on what you buy.

My 98 A4 has 112K on it. Runs like a champ. But I am one anal mofo for taking care of my care. heh<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>38079.0704282407</editDate></edited>

if you plan to modify the car - I'd suggest a 1.8t. Can't modify the 2.8 much for extra performance besides a monstrously expensive supercharger.

just a thought.

its not lack of respect - I just dont want a guy to buy a car for the wrong reasons! If he plans to mod he will be disappointed with a 2.8 for sure.<img border="0" src=smileys/smiley3.gif border="0">
