Have you checked for leaks or the pump itself.

Is there fluid in the power steering reservoir? Is the serpentine belt intact?

Is the oil leak you mention from the power steering or engine?

Open your power steering fluid reservoir to make sure that's engine oil. If the reservoir is full and the belt is intact like HB said, then my bets would be on the pump itself.

Unless there is a possibility that an electronic malfunction caused the power steering to fail? I doubt it. Just a thought.

The power steering uses a fluid that must meet VAG specification G002, it does not use engine oil.

There are no electronic controls for the power steering on the B5.

I know very well what my car uses for power steering and its not engine oil. I never said it was. I was just saying to check the reservoir to see how much fluid he has left.

I have a power steering leak as we speak and I just spent 15 bucks for a liter of Pentosin or however it is spelt. So yes, I know its not engine oil.

It may be a good idea for you to read what you typed before you post.

It is good that you know to use Pentosin CHF11.S for your fluid as any other fluid will eventually attack the seals and other non-metallic components.

Most of the time, the rack end seals leak requiring the rack to be exchanged for a unit that has been overhauled. The reservoir can also seep causing loss of fluid.
