possible bad INNER cv joint?
ok so I just installed both front half shafts and have this shaking going on. my one tie rod is a little worn but nothing that should cause this. okay at 50MPH or lower you wouldn't notice anything but by 80MPH it feels as if the car is about to come apart. the shaking is so bad in the steering wheel and if I put a drink in the dash beer holder you can watch the liquid actually jump. it also feels at times like the car is pulling to one side. I've read these are the symptoms but would like a tech to let me know what they think or anyone thatr has dealt with one before I go accusing the parts place of giving me faulty parts. Thank you.

RE: possible bad INNER cv joint?
I'm not sure what to tell you it is, but I doubt it's a bad inner CV joint. That'd give you the clacking in turns like a bad outer joint would, but even so, if you just installed new halfshafts, it's doubtful one is bad from the start. I'd check out the suspension completely, maybe even tighten everything up to torque spec, just in case the shop didn't do so when they put in your axles.

RE: possible bad INNER cv joint?
okay here is what I got off a website of a cv joint supplier. "A bad outer Audi axle shaft CV joint will make a clicking noise when accelerating and turning from a stop sign.
This is a strong indicator that the outer Audi CV joint is worn. As a general rule the inner Audi CV joint seldom, if ever, makes this clicking noise. The symptoms of a bad inner Audi CV joint on is when vibration, shuddering or torquing is felt through the cars steering wheel and is noticed upon straight line accelerating (steering will pull to the left or right). " I will get underneath and check though. |
RE: possible bad INNER cv joint?
I had put a frontaxle on my daughters Subaru that I had gotten from Advanced Auto and I had the same problems. Not so much on the vibration but it pulled to one side very badly. I knew it had to be the axle so I called and ordered another. When it came I got it and swaped them out. Car handled fine again. I checked the joints on the one I took back and after a week of running they were still so tight you couldn't flex them with your hands.
I'm guessing your on the right track with your accessment of the symptoms. Good Luck... |
RE: possible bad INNER cv joint?
dude if your tie rod is bad that probably what causing it, you wouldnt feel any thing in the steering wheel, how bad is the tie rod, even if its minimal play your gonna have steering issues.

No kidding - I wasn't aware of that. Learn something every day:)

RE: possible bad INNER cv joint?
I do believe that you need an alignment after dealing with the CV joints... Hince the pull to one side of the road. I'm not sure what to say about the vibration though,,, other than don't drive it until you double check your work.

RE: possible bad INNER cv joint?
correct me if im wrong but a cv boot does not affect performance at all, just keeps those bad boys greased. just replaced mine and its nothing more than an annoying sound when youre slowing down. the sound makes you replace it quickly its annoying and you know your shaft is def suffering

RE: possible bad INNER CV joint?
Do you have a manual trans? When I was looking for CV Axles they didnt have them for stick models, only Trip in most shops. they may have put the wrong axles in. If they did that, you should get it fixed before it destroys the splines.
the shops tried to tell me it was only a 1/16th inch difference and 'should work' |
