question before chipping
Will, I went to my friends auto shop, and I asked him about chipping. He said that he would send it off and do the work to my car in the mean time. He quoted about $1000 for the whole thing. 600 for the chip and 400 to have my fuel pump upgraded.
Now my question is, does this sound right? I thought that when chipping, i would need to upgrade the DV and the spark plugs if they are the stock ones. however he told me otherwise. Thanks for your help in advance. |
fuel pump, thats if were talking 100's of hp not 20-50 like a chip. ask about a higher fuel pressure regulator. adjustable if its legal in your state would be ideal. unless you dont care about jonny law.
but you might need to upgrade lines and fixtures if you have higher pressures and your injectors can only take about 75psi befor they fail from overheating or just stay open all the time |
A fuel pump is generally not needed until you're BAT status, unless your stock one is bad and they're replacing it with an upgraded one. In that case, you can get a walbro 255 for $105, a bentley manual for $100 and do the work yourself. :)
If you're getting chipped all you will need is the chip, plugs, and a 710n dv. fuel lines, injectors, fuel rail, etc will all handle it fine.... |
DV and worn vacuum lines should be your main concern. Chip was built for stock fuel pump.
|
yep, and your chip was meant for a 4 bar fpr which u have already, so no need to buy an adjustable one either. if your fuel pump isn't bad, it does not need to be replaced.

600 for a chip? speedtuning is 300, GIAC is a little more, even unitronics is under 500. you could have found an already chipped ECU in the classifieds for 100-200. thats not exacly a friendly price hes charging you.
and yea a walbro fuel pump is 100, plus an hour or two to install @80 bucks an hour is only $260 for the pump. if you want a walbro intank pump (for a 1.8t) i have one im selling. brand new $80 shipped, pm me for details. if hes charging you $1000, you could save yourself $600-700 if you went elsewhere. |
Or $800... Speed Tuning should be $200 for us.
|
yeah, what chip does this guy put in?

sorry, i meant 500 for the chip. I don't remember the company that he told me that does the programing atm.
I realize that I can do all of this myself. The fuel pump however i could not, which was the only reason I would take it to him. Thanks for clearing this up for me. I thought that it sounded a little off. Is there a good DV that people could recommend? and in what configuration, push or pull? And how is it 200? i thought that its 250 from speed tuning |
