I have a rattle/tapping noise only from 1600-2000 rpm range. Any one else have this issue or know what it could be?

do you have a hooker tied up in your trunk?

could be a bunch of different things. it would help us to know what year and engine in your B5. and specifically where you hear this noise. and a bit more about the conditions under which the noise is heard.

initial thought based on what I know so far (almost nothing) is cam chain tensioner (search)

Sorry 2001 1.8t miles 110,000 timing belt,water pump,and clutch where all replaced at 90k this noise seems to be coming from the top of the engine.
and rear of the valve cover i think? Just got the car 2 weeks ago and all was great.

 

Motor mounts in those things are notorious for going bad. I don't know if you have access to a lift but if you do look under the L and R engine mounts, if you see a purplish black stain / fluid on them your mounts are most likely bad and are causing at least some of your rattle / tapping noise. Hope this helps.

i got the same problem and its driving me crazy .. let me know if you figure this out. I also have a new noise when im on the gas , it sounds like an exhaust leak but ive had the exhaust checked 99 2.8L Q Audi a4
