Rear factory amp replacement - what can I use and what size fuse does the amp use?
1998 B5 with active rear speakers (Audi system not the BOSE system).
1. What size amp will the factory wiring support if I want to remove the Audi amp from the rear speakers and upgrade both the amp and speakers?
I am not looking to fit a BIG amp just something better than the one Audi have provided to drive a better set of speakers and hopefully without the need for re-wiring!
2. Which fuse controls the radio and/or the rear amp. On checking the handbook at pages 174 and 175 there are two references to the radio fuse:
37 - Telephone (D-net), radio............................................. .. 20 amps
43 - S-contact (central locking, radio, navigation system).......... 5 amps
The 20 amp seems a little high for a tape deck but the 5 amp seems low. I seem to think that most aftermarket head units have a 10amp fuse fitted into the rear?

i could be wrong but i am positive there is going to be some massive rewiring, i am doing the same thing soon but lucky me my audi came with a aftermarket deck.
i am positive but mainly all stereo decks come with a 10amp fuse not sure about amps some come with 30 some 20 some 10 some dont use them they have a build in "protect system".
why do you need to replace the fuse did it blow ? if so take the amp out and check the number on it.

Problem with non-bose is only the rears are amplified so you'll have to code your HU as a bose, run RCA's to the new amp and run speaker wires from that to the doors. There's a fuse on the back of the HU, not sure about the amp though.

There is no fuse in the factory Audi amp for the rear active speakers.
I want to replace the amp with something better - something that only draws the same current through the wiring, hence the need to know which fuse in the fusebox deals with the amp.

Hey, I just bought a 1998 a4, bose systm... only 2 door speekers work, and the rear deck speekers are missing. The amp is there...
I wonder how many watts the amp is? and how many watts are the door speekers?
Should i just get 2 new speekers or 4 new ones and use a bigger amp...
Anyone know how many watts these things are?
