SAP Question
I notice that sometimes my secondary air pump would kick on when im at a red light. I doesnt stay on that long, but i thought it only turns on during cold starts.
Is my car trying to tell me something?

Could just be a sticky relay; opening up when it shouldn't. Try popping the relay out, giving it a good shake, and plugging it back in. If that doesn't do it, a new relay is at most 40 bucks, just replace that, its cheaper than a new pump. But at least your system works... Been trying to figure out what's wrong with mine for almost two years now. If only I didn't live in a smog controlled state...
I have the same issue with mine, i actually do not think there is anything wrong with the system. I know it turns on for a predetermined amount of time on cold starts, but then I believe that if the vehicle has not reached a certain temp, the secondary air pump will turn back on to help emitt cleaner emissions. Not 100% positive, but i've found this exact problem on a bunch of b5's. Also when the outside temp is super cold im talking like 25 and lower my pump won't turn on.
Yeah these past couple of weeks my exhaust is toxic for miles until it warms up. that's kind of what I was getting at, if it isn't up to temp it should kick in at idle. Although it shouldn't be kicking on at idle after it gets up to temp.
