Default Shift linkage AUTO a4 2.8

.. So I have completed my swap from the parts car to the good body. Everything was perfect.. Went to start it and quickly realised that I couldn't get the car into park. Every gear is one above where it is supposed to be at.. IE.. I can't get into park. Car runs.. Warms up, sounds good.. I want to drive it.. But I also want to be able to park it. Did I just put the shifter linkage on when the shifter was in the wrong spot? Or what happened? Any ideas?

Thanks
stu

Yes started in neutral. I adjusted the shift linkage out a little and it went straight into park. Didn't even see the adjustment nuts putting it on. Oh well 98 audi a4 midnight blue cream leather interior auto 2.8 quattro 70000 miles on body 100000 on motor just replaced water pump and timeing belt. Runs smooth asking 7.

Because the previous owner decided to hit a rather large object and proceed to puncture a hole in the oil pan and drive it the whole way home. This destroying the 70 thousand mile motor. I had a parts 2.8 a4 smashed real hard in the butt. That car had 100 thousand on the motor. Next thing you know its in the 70 thousand mile body. Tricky I know.
