Default Starting issue.. I think.

I looked around for similar problems like mine in other threads with no luck. Car is a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro. In the past month or so I have had starting problems. First being the car wouldn't start at all, so a new battery seemed to solve that. Them a week or so ago, it failed to start again, so I got a new starter.

Well since the new starter was put in, the car seems to idle strangely when I turn it on. After leaving the car overnight, it takes about 3 seconds for the car to turn over and when it finally does, the RPMs jet up to about 1300, then dip far below 1000. It even stalled once. It takes about a minute for it to settle at about 900.

This video shows what I mean although not as bad as it is when it sits overnight. This is after it sat for 5 hours or so. Sorry for no sound.

Well to me that looks like icv (idle control valve) problem or a bad tps (throttle position sensor). I have a post up of cleaning my icv and the back of the throttle body without removing it and it cured my erratic idle issues and stalling. It was really gummed up with oil residue. Also check your vac lines if possible.

Thanks for the reply. It ran no codes, so I'll check this out.

Also do you have a link to that post?

Edit: Called my mechanic and he said those things would show codes, and there were none. So any other ideas?

Mine did not throw any codes until the very last time it stalled which took it about 15 times over a month. Here is the link I used..

Sorry I thought you had a V6....Arrrgh lol. Well I'm not sure of the location on the 1.8s exactly they should be in the general area I would hope. Sorry man I still would really do this first and it should be done at 90k or before.

if you turn the key to the on position for a few (10) seconds before starting the engine, does it start any faster or any easier?

I'm going to get the car now, so I'll give this a try and get back to you.
