So today started out with the plan of pulling the block out of the Evo because I pulled the head the other day and the valves were all bent, cylinder 3 was all dinged up, and cylinder 4 was crumbled to bits. But it was too cold and windy outside (where the evo is) so I pulled the Audi motor out for shits and giggles cuz its in my garage. It's a good thing I did tho cuz the noise that I thought was a bad cam chain tensioner, was really a broken rivet on the pressure plate which was allowing a tab to contact the bell housing. It did some nice gouges, some spots are about half inch deep. I'll call Spec tomorrow and see if they will cover it. Here's some pics. I'll get one of the evo pistons and upload it later.

funny how you just have random parts all over the place

FASTER Dec 6, 2010 11:44 AM

You don't know the half of it lol. My house is like an aftermarket shop for audis evos and fox body mustangs.

Anyone ever have a similar problem with there clutch?

Here's the body of the email response I got back from Spec this morning, only 15 minutes after I sent them pics. Pretty happy with that response.

Well. It's inconclusive to me exactly how that strap came loose, but it appears it may have been a sheared rivet/pin. I would like to issue you a return# to see how it happened and I can probably also get you into a new pressure plate either way. Just need to get it back here. Regarding the bellhousing, there's really nothing in our warranty policy that covers parts outside of the clutch and/or flywheel themselves. It is common policy for warranties to only cover specific parts themselves. It remains to be seen whether or not that is an abnormal failure of a rivet/pin or some other issue, so I can't really tell either way. Let me know if you would like to send the unit in here for a warranty claim. I will expedite you a return number to write on the box. Also let me know your original purchase date/location if you have that handy. What was the make, model, and year also, just so I can have that in the return-paperwork details.

AAnd some pics of the Evo pistons.

sorry to hear about the clutch/bell housing, but at least it sounds like Spec is cooperating. Just out curiosity, how many cars do you have? lol

Not too many lol. The Evo is my friends, I just work on it a lot and he keeps it at my house. And I'm only half owner of the 5.0 with the guy that owns the Evo.
I'm glad Spec is playing ball with me. We emailed back and forth a few more times and things are looking good.

I'm not looking for anything on the bell. It was only idling when this happened, so it didn't compromise the structural integrity of the bell. Not to mention I have and extra one anyway. I wonder what it would look like if it happened when I was revving out to 8500rpm lol. Makes me want a scatter shield just a lil more.

What are those scallops in the tops of the evo pistons, relief cutouts for the valves?

FASTER Dec 7, 2010 10:40 AM

Nah, that's just SuperTech's piston design. It's hard to tell from the pics, but my JE pistons have a lil step on one side, similar to what our stock pistons look like.
