There are DIYs out there for the turbo fours which is why I'm asking about the OP's engine. If it's a 2.8 I'll detail the steps but if it's a 1.8T the DIYs will explain.

Lol I have my kit and was going to do the same. Go for it though - post it up and I'll add it to the DIY section.

Its the 2.8 and 1996. Well I'm on my mobile so its hard to find the DIY. I almost got it right, its only firing on 3 cylinders I think and it has a mad lope and sounds terrible, I'm afraid I'll ruin my piston or get a knock. /:

Don't start it again. If it's running, even on three cylinders, then you may not have damaged it. Still, err on the side of caution. You need to tear it down again.

I'm on my phone as well and it'll be really tedious to type this all out, so once I get on the computer in the morning I'll come back and post up on how to re-time it and get it set correctly. If you're intending to work on it tonight, get the front of the car opened back up and torn down to the timing system but don't disassemble the belt or tensioners yet. I want to illustrate a few things to you on your engine so you can see how they're off-time.
