Question TipTronic...

Hey guys -

Ive got my 01 2.8 and its got TIP. I love the semi automatic - especially in the snow - and the steering wheel buttons are pretty fun as well. However, whenever I use it I always wonder about whats good and whats bad. I figured I'd just ask u guys about it...

What exactly is GOOD and what is exactly BAD for the tiptronic?

Was the Tip transmission made to be thrown around alot? I mean is it ok to gun it and keep it in first until redline?

Also, is it bad to manually downshift in TIP when coming to a stop?

I always feel like, especially when I downshift, that maybe I should just go easy on the tip but I was just wondering if Audi made the TIP tranny pretty strong or not.

Also, any good tips or fun things to do with the tip?

Lastly, how worse of gas mileage do you get when you use the TIP?

I am pretty new to audis but do not know whats good and dont want to be embarrased when I find out that I burned up my AUTOMATIC transmission and have to pay 4 grand for another one

Any input here would be great as well as past experiences - GOOD OR BAD

Thanks in advance guys

DONT forget to take the poll!!

Tip mode may actually prolong the life as the torque converter locks up more. Either way doesn't hold a flame to a 5 speed.

it's easier to drive in traffic with the tip........... and as far as bad, it's not a manual.

...

Also, any good tips or fun things to do with the tip?
GIAC tip chip
I'll take a 5spd, please.

YES YES YES, I KNOW, go ahead and rip on me for not getting a stick

however, when I purchased my B5 I only had a few options and I wanted a 2001 silver V6 and the car I bought just had the tip so I stuck with it.

Anyways, pyropenguin, I just researched about the GIAC tip chip and I am ver very interested but where can I pick one of those up?

thanks again guys

I got a tip model because my wife is manual transmission impaired (stupid on my part - I don't let her drive my car anyway), but I did the GIAC chip and it's pretty smooth. All other things being equal, if you have the GIAC tip chip and leave the car in automatic (not tip mode) you'll probably take a 5 speed because it shifts so fast. In general the manual is faster and maybe more fun, but with Tip you have most of the fun and the option to put it in auto in **** traffic. Spend the $200 and chip the tranny.........
