Default tires.

i found a place that has Nexen 7000 series 235/40/17 (the size i want) all 4 mounted and balenced for $373.86 out the door. he said the tires are rated for 30 to 40k miles. should i not go with these tires for any reason?

I've never heard of Nexen so do some research. I wouldn't if it were me though.

Absolutely do not screw around with your tires. 6 inches of stopping distance could be the difference between safety and a terrible accident. A little bit of wet/snow traction could be the difference between safety and getting stuck in a ditch (or worse). Stick to known brands like Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, etc., even if it means you have to pay more. My mom buys Uniroyal Tiger Paws for like $40/ea, which I would bet are better than those no-name tires, and I've driven them in the snow, and let me tell you, I'd take my old Camaro with Bridgestone RE960AS in the snow over her old Escort with those Uniroyals any day. (Obviously if judging the cars themselves, the Escort was about the worst around, but that's a different story.)

Are those all-seasons? If so, I recommend you pony up for some Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus or Bridgestone RE960AS. They'll cost more, but it's worth it. And they won't wear out in 30k miles.

Go to Tire Rack's site and see if they sell them. If so, read the reviews on the site to get a feel for the experiences others have had with them.

^ That is always a good place to start. Kumho usually makes some pretty decent tires that won't break the bank.

No, Kumho really isn't very good. People buy them because they're teh cheap. Though I'd take them over no-name crap, but they aren't far from no-name themselves.
