I have a 1998 A4 2.8 quattro 5sp and it makes a grinding noise while in first gear but it goes away in the rest of the gears..
any ideas of what it might be??

and i were to want to replace the tranny what kind of tranny could i replace it with??
does it have to have the same tranny code and same everything as my car??
i love the car i dont want to have to part with it!!!

I would start saving. Try to get by and get a used manual transmission. They can be found. Only way to know what is going on right now is to drop the transmission and open it up. Don't bother, just if it gets worse you will know what is coming. You can change your fluid out if you haven't already, but some will suggest leaving it in due to it "holding things together".

 

thanks ive found a couple of used transmissions already but i was wondering if they had to be the same transimission code as the one in my car.
