Transmission not engaging in reverse

OK I have a 2001 Audi A4 Quatro 1.8 T and Every time I put the car in reverse it will hesitate then engage then after 4 seconds or so it disengages and if I put in neutral or park or drive and then put it back in reverse it will engage again but again for only seconds before it disengages again. It seems to do this whenever the car is hot. If its a cold start in the morning I usually got the reverse engaged for about 8-10 seconds before it again disengages. Any thoughts?? All other gears work just fine so IM lost and new to the Audi scene....

Hi i have just bought a a6 with auto box ,on test drive it was ok,but soon as i got home it would engage reverse but do nothing ,all forward gears are ok,tomorrow im going to check the trans level,if not that ,then ill drop the oil out of the box ,remove the trans plate, blow out the ports in box (as known to get blocked, replace the trans cover, fill with oil,see if that solves the problem first before i replace or repair the box ,(audi say these are sealed for life ,what a load of s***t,these boxes need oil change every 2 services to stop any problems,,,,,
