Default unknown vacuum line!? 2.8

so i was cleaning my throttle body and replacing my vacuum lines(old and falling apart) when i found this one, pic below, just hanging from the down tube between the MAF and throttle body. i can't find the other part of the line(if it broke) or where it is supposed to plug into. any one know? thanks!

Is this the 12 valve or 30 valve engine. I recently replaced all of the vacuum lines on my 30v and don't recall any attaching at the throttle body. Is the sticker with all of the diagram still intact under the hood?

If the vacuum hoses are in that bad of shape, you may want to consider getting about 3m of 3.5mm silicone vacuum hose and replacing them all.

Perhaps I'm not full understanding the location that you think the hose is supposed to connect to.

Almost all of the lines are covered in this DIY. I say almost all, because I believe he left off the one that goes to the front of the engine for the variable intake.

Perhaps you can go though the ones mentioned/pictured and shed some more light on it. If you can get more pictures of the area you are talking about, it would also be helpful.

the highlighted green part is what i've been calling the "down tube"

and attached to the bottom of it i found a stray vacuum line, highlighted in red, i don't know where the other end is supposed to attach to; or whether the line popped off what it is supposed to be attached to or if it broke midway.

I have a 30v 2.8 and on mine the down pipe you are referring to doesn't look like that. Mine doesn't have the nipple with the vacuum line on it. The nipple looks like it's part of the crankcase breather system judging from the size of it and the amount of gunk on it.

You're talking about part of the breather system. I just worked with the folks at ECS Tuning to identify all of the breather system plumbing parts for my son's 30v (low VIN); it took a few trys, but we finally got all of the parts.

This should be a help. The one marked as Audi A4 2.8 is the 12v engine. The two marked as VW Passat 2.8 are the 30v engine.

I thought maybe you had a 12v engine which is why the intake duct you have looks different. But the 12v intake duct doesn't look like that and yours says "AHA" on the sticker on it which is the 30v engine. Does yours have a nipple near the bolt hole also? Mine looks like this. And in the picture that shows all of your vacuum lines, where is the line running that comes from under the wire with the green plug and then goes off the screen in the lower right corner of the picture?
