Default Urgent Question

Hello, I have a couple of quick questions, one of them is pretty urgent.

I have a 2000 A4 2.8. The car burns oil, you can smell it as well as it goes thru a qt about every 1000 miles or so. You can smell the burnt oil, but the car leaves no oil spots in the driveway at all. The only thing that I can tell is that there is a what I can only describe as a whisp of smoke coming out from somewhere under the air intake assembly on the passenger side. Anybody have this problem or would anyone have a place for me to look for the leak? The valve covers aren't leaking, I just can't tell where its at, and its burning thru some oil.

Also, when I crank the car below 50 degrees there is noise coming from under the hood, only until the car warms up. It sounds like a belt rubbing against something, but it doesn't seem like the front belt is touching anything. Could it possibly be the timing chain? Is it needing replacement?

Thanks for any help -Tim

Sounds like a leaking valve cover gasket for the first thing, mine did exactly the same thing, the oil drips onto the exhaust. As far as the belts I dont know for sure someone else might chime in, my belts are much louder when its cold or damp out, they are more whiney.

i was just going to tell you to check your turbo but since u have a 2.8 it should be the valve cover seal... check your right valve cover seal on the back left side... it might be leasking from there..

For that little whisp of smoke check the rear of the passenger side valve cover and see if the crank case vent hose is still attached. Mine had broken off the valve cover and was doing the same thing. I cleaned mine up and JB welded it back on. All is well with that now.
Been holding for 2 years now. I got some Jpegs if that might help.

Good Luck...
