Default Where to find Engine Code (ie: AFC)

Hello,
the previous owner of my A4 switched out the engine & transmission with what I assumed to be another A4 engine & transmission. The transmission is a type CJP, which was only mounted on A4's from 94-96, according to ETKA. Also according to ETKA, the only engine with the CJP transmission was the AAH. Before I order any more parts for this car, I'd like to be sure. So...

Are there any markings on the engine to say what it is? I know it's a 2.8l V6, and it seems safe to assume it's the 12V. Other than that, I'm just guessing at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

try looking under the engine cover thats where it is on mine when you take it off there might be a engraving on a metal tab mins on the front right of it but if its an older engine like you say it might be then idk where you could find it

theres a metal tab that hes talking about that sticks out of the head near the timing belt on the 1.8t. im not exactly sure where it is on a V6 but there will always be an engine code stamped into the block itself. that might be a little hard finding it because its often covered in oil and crap that builds up, but it is there.

the letters on the head is just for the head. The block will have its own code on one of the sides of the block.
