can anyone recommend where to get a good/cheap vag-com system? there are tons of them on e-bay, but i cant figure out which one i need to get.

 

get a OBD2 usb one, and download Vag-Com 409.1-s... thats what i did... you can pay 100$ for the pro version but the free version works good too... just you cant log..

 

well you cant log above block 25 you mean. and you cant adjust some things that you could in the registered version. the freeware version is ok but il be buying the full version as soon as i find a cheap laptop.

 

im looking to get a tablet pc. or the ASUS EEE 7" laptop something to keep in my car all the time.

yea thats what im looking for too. either that or like a palm pilot with vag com loaded on it. ive been building computers way longer then building cars and i know i can find something second hand for like 100 bucks, which is what ive been waiting to find. a $500 or more laptop is not in the build budget.

 

yea.... check out www.stealitback.com its police auctions for stuff like that, you can probly find a palm or old laptop for a decent price.. i have an old Palm VIIc around here some where.. i could just load it onto that and buy the cable... i hate leaving a 1000$ laptop in my car all the time, i always feel like someone is going to take it... if i get a small or old 150$ laptop that i wouldnt care about, that wouldnt bug me.

Why not just go to ross-tech.com and get a REAL cable? You get all the functions and do have to buy another cable when you find out you cant do what you want
