Question Would you buy?? (My first Audi)

I've done some research and I understand all that comes with owning an Audi. But I'd like to see what some of you thought about this specific car that I'm going to check out (and most likely buy). I wanted to see if anything stands out that you might be question or be worried about (it's easy to oversee things at times). He's asking $7,500.

Check it out - any suggestions/opinions are really appreciated!! Thanks!

The ad is long (here's the copy and paste!) Pics are below also.

For sale is my 2001 Audi A4 1.8 turbo. 5-speed manul, 136k miles. From the factory the car is equipped with all available 1.8t trim options including, Quattro all-wheel drive (with electronic locking differentials), the Winter package (heated seats/mirrors and a ski sack), Sport package (16” “sport” design wheels, larger diameter front and rear sway bars, 10mm lower and stiffer suspension, 3 spoke leather steering wheel and larger leather shift ****), the premium package (includes moonroof and “homelink” garage door opening system w/ 3 buttons, auto-dimming mirrors), the premium audio package (Bose system with 8 speakers, 2 in each front door, 1 in each rear and 2 small “subwoofers” in the rear decklid, stock amp located in truck behind liner, head-unit has single cd-player and cassetter, dual fm tunners, CD changer prewiring) and HID (Xenon) headlights.

Safety: 4-wheel ABS power-disc brakes, Electronic locking differential (senses wheel-slip and applies that wheels brake to send power to other wheels with traction), 8 total airbags – Unique to 2001 B5 (standard driver/passenger, driver passenger side airbags (in the seat bolster), front and rear side impact curtain/head airbags).

I am the second owner, I purchased the car in December of 2006. The car has seen nothing but synthetic oil changed at 3-4k mile intervals always using a larger oil filter (yanking the oil cap and looking at the crankcase shows it!). I have a large stack of receipts, since I have owned the car I have replaced the clutch (with a SouthBend OFE clutch/OEM flywheel), replaced the front control arms and tie-rod ends, replaced the timing belt and all associated accessories (thermostat, water pump, tensioners, access belt), replaced the front brakes with powerslot rotors and ceramic pads, replaced the front shocks with Bilstein and rear with Koni adjustables. Just in the last 500 miles I replaced both motor mounts, the snub mount, and both transmission mounts. New spark plugs!

Replaced the front door speakers w/ pioneers that are an inch larger (and added a modest 12” Alpine type R subwoofer, wiring can be left or removed depending on buyers preference, wiring is not run throughout the car, the car’s Bose system amp is in the trunk, so I grabbed the signals there), just recently replaced the HID (Xenon) light bulbs as the old ones had started to fade as happens over time/use, added Hella Micro DE 55w fog lights, added a “Dension Ice link” ipod integration kit (this is pretty cool, it allows one to access their ipod (ANY) through the cd changer prewiring/controls, so hit track forward on the stereo and the ipod goes next track etc, the dock is Velcro’d to the stereo so it is removable to change tracks etc, dock supports charging of all regular ipods, but not my touch or Iphone ) I added wider, lower side skirts which are very similar to the ones found on S4's. I may be leaving a few things out here and there, I will update the ad if I think of anything.

The goodies. This car is a spectacular blast to drive thanks to its bolt-on turbo upgrade and several other parts from the Audi catalog. A borg warner K04 is used (the same turbo found in the Audi TT225) with a larger TT225 MAF, and higher flow (386cc) Audi TT225 specific injectors. To provide adequate air cooling, a Greddy Front Mount Intercooler resides up front under the bumper. A larger diameter, louder, yet fairly refined, Borla exhaust helps the whole system breath and gives a deeper soundtrack. ECU tuning is provided by GIAC software. The file is: FX K04, pseudonym “Hammer.” In stock form the 2001 1.8t makes 170hp and 166-ft lbs. (20 more hp than earlier 1.8t engines), with the K04 upgrade it has roughly 240-250hp and 270-280-ft lbs. This power is immediately felt. Despite its potential, the car still returns phenomenal gas mileage. Gas mileage is not sacrificed with a high power turbo car because it more or less operates as a 1.8 liter when driven modestly.

The car comes with two sets of wheels/tires (or one should the buyer prefer which can be negotiated). The original equipment 16”x7” 10 spoke sport wheels with 205/60/16 daytona rubber are currently on the car for the winter. The ‘summer’ wheels, which I’ve always used on my Audis for the last 5 or so years (new tires obviously) are 18”x8” et 32 (they fill out the wheel well and give the car a really wide stance) RS4 replicas with Kuhmo Summer Performance Tires 225/40/18. This wheel/tire combo makes the cars steering much more responsive and the car feel like its riding on rails, but with larger wheels always comes at least a slight ride sacrifice)

The car is fitted with a Seibon carbon fiber hood, and is secured using both the original hinges and hood latch system, as well as Aerocatch hood pins (check out a demo of these on youtube, pretty cool as well and more discrete than other cheap hoodpins). These were just professionally installed by a local body shop our family has used for years (I was afraid of messing up the carbo fiber weave when cutting out the hood pin shape in the hood). The clearcoat on the hood has a few cracks. It is extremely tolerable, and most people don’t notice it until I say something, but I am very particular about my cars, so I feel I should mention it). Important: The hood can be swapped for an OEM 2000 Brilliant black A4 hood if you wish. My brother has wanted to trade hoods with me for about a year now, and I spoke with him about it and he agreed.

The paint has some nicks and scratches as it is an 8 year old car, but overall is in good condition having always been garaged kept and cleaned frequently (especially in those salty winter months).

The windows are tinted to 20%, which provides great relief from the sun, but isn’t too dark that you can’t safely see at night. The rear badges are removed (A4, 1.8t, Quattro) and one badge, German sport badge is there in its place. AWE drivers side vent boost gauge.

The trip display (red LCD thing in cluster) still works perfectly, with no lines missing. This is extremely rare to see (our other 3 are completely trashed), I leave it turned off, and only use it when I want to see info (temp, mpg, avg speed, timer, etc) and it has stayed perfect!

There is a rip in the drivers seat, on the left cushion. This rip is extremely common and really should have been recognized as a recall, but no luck. I glued it closed, and it has never once bothered me, but again, its worth mentioning.

I have enjoyed every minute I’ve owned this car, but have decided I would like to switch over to an S4 to achieve higher power easier (not necessarily cheaper..). This is one of 4 B5 A4s we have owned (currently own 3), it has been meticulously cared for with all the problem areas attended too (control arms and timing belt being the two big things).

This car is a real head turner, I get comments and praise all the time for it. The classic look of the B5 A4, with updated/aggressive cosmetics. Please call for more info or with any questions. I need a quick sale, so please don’t hesitate to make reasonable offers!!

I need to snap a few newer pictures. These are highly representative of the car, the newest is the bottom right, which shows the fog lights. The only thing not shown is the hood pins, which were just installed a month ago. The rear of the car and the interior look exactly the same as the pictures. White thing to right of stereo is Ipod in it's dock. Boost gauge is above left side of stereo, green dot to left was radar detector mute switch. The car is currently on the smaller 16" wheels which is why I haven't bothered with nicer/clean pics.

sounds like not too bad of a deal. the only thing i would be concerned about is the miles are a bit high but that is offset by the extenzive mod list. it does state the timing belt has been done but make sure it was done within the last thirty thousand. for a comparison i picked up my 2001 tqm with sport, cold weather, and premium packages with 115k on it for 6500 without any mods at all.

The higher miles were my first/obvious concern. But I talked to the guy and I feel confident that he knows what he's doing - and the fact that a few of the major things have been done. I think it's a pretty good buy. I don't really need a new car or anything... but I'd like to get into a 4 door turbo that looks this good. It'll be more fun than the accord I drive now!

I'll check with him to see exactly when the timing belt was put in.

Not sure what "holy book man" means??

Thanks!!

The guy seems very straight forward and seems to have taken very good care of the car. I would buy it in a heart beat but might offer him 7k if he's not firm on the price.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I just wanted to post it and get some feedback from some of you - for reassurance I guess. I'll wait and see if anyone else has anything to say.

I've got until Thursday - that's the first day he can show me the car. Unless there is something he's not mentioning I'll most likely buy it!

Thanks again!

I would definately try to bring down the price. You have to be careful when viewing used cars with mods. He could be a guy who simply appreciates mods and hasn't been beating the **** out of it. Or... it could have been redlined constantly.

It sounds like he's an enthusiast that cares for his car and actually know what he's talking about. I wouldn't hesitate to have it checked out by a euro shop and buy it.

Ask him if he's on AZ/AW/AF....

I paid 6 for mine and then had to get the timing belt changed... although mine was a 1 owner and only had 81k miles. but sounds just like your though without the mods
