Your thoughts on Mobil1 15w50?

When I first got my car, I used 5w30. Then I tried 5w40 and the infamous tapping noise that I have is a lot quieter now. I'm thinking that 15w50 would maybe make the motor sound even better, but I hear that there's a risk of the engine not starting at really cold temps? Where I live, it can get down to about 15-20 deg. in the morning during the winter sometimes. I'm just trying to decide what's the best oil to use year round without taking any risks. If there's something even better, I'm open to suggestions, thanks.

What does Audi recommend?

I definitely wouldn't use oil that thick, personally.

Wouldn't it clog the lines to the turbo?

I think i use 10w-30 Full synthetic, that or 5w-30. It was Q horsepower and it's worked great for me so far. I'm pretty sure those are what audi recommends.

3x 5w-40
+
2x 15-50
=
10w-45 (or so)

you can try that and see if the clicking sound lessens.

The Mobil1 website claims that it's meant for turbocharged engines, so I don't know. Maybe trying it out one time wouldn't hurt, now that the weather is still hot. Here's the link.

its not that the engine wouldnt start, but when the oil is 15 degrees it may not pump fast enough. the turbo needs full oil pressure within 3-5 seconds or it does significant damage. it may be fine for 80 degree summer temperatures, but personally i wouldnt put anything above 40 weight oil in my car.

15w50 is wayyy to thick for low temperatures. 0w50 or 5w50 might work down there if it were available, but i would just stick to what we know works.

Too thick. Use to 0W-40 or 5W-30. And pretty much anything Q-State turns the engine orange and caramelizes on the camshafts.

Stick with what works: Castrol full synth, Mobil1, or Elf 5W-30 or 0W-40.

If you have cam tensioner noise, try some Seafoam or BG MOA in the crankcase to help break down any sludge. If it's still excessively noisy, replace the tensioner.

Yeah, that sounds like some good advice there. Thanks for the info. I'll probably stick to just the 5w40 then.
