Your shifter would look like this. + & - signs.

Hey man.....
CVT can be bad... But it all depends on how you drive it. I have seen most threads here where the CVT goes bad between 40-75k miles. I am currently on 84k with no issues... But that is not to say they cannot creep up. I do not drive the **** out of my car, as I know the CVT is a touchy piece... I also refuse to do any engine upgrades. This is known to fry CVT's due to the precision programming done for the CVT. To extend your CVT life, there are many theories...
Don't over drive your car...
Change CVT fluid (@ $20 a qt and a CVT needs 7....)
Do 7 plate upgrade(search)
Don't over-drive your car...
Stay away from using the cool Tiptronic shifter.. Eats the plates away faster..
Don't over-drive your car........
NO UPGRADES!! NO CHIPS!!! NO EXHAUST OR INTAKE!!!!!
Don't over-drive your car....

My understanding is that if it's not quattro and an automatic, you have CVT. If it's quattro, you've got a conventional automatic.

I'm confused now because I think I have a 5 speed tiptronic, I have 02 a4 1.8t quattro and i have the + & - signs in my car too, but i do not believe it is a CVT.

FWD automatic = CVT.

quattro automatic = not CVT.

any manual = not CVT. (obviously)
