????????
Hello,
I'm a first time car buyer just graduated from high-school and I'm attending college for Criminal Justice,
I went car shopping pulled up to some a mercedez-benz dealer and on the right to it is a used car dealer.
I saw an 2002 A4, fell in love with it
Took it out for a little drive, the next took it out for 3 hours unfortunately my mechanic couldn't look at it but I saw that the breaks are practically shot, the rotor and pads... horrible
and then the timing belt or whatever .. idk for a fact that it was going but just doing research on the internet A4's have problems with the bands..
the used car dealer OF COURSE didn't tell me any of this ... but he said he would fix the breaks and look at the timing-belt
the question is
...
My grandpa said he would give me a for free a2000 Mercury Grand Marquis, the car is in the best shape possible, 70k miles .. but I know the car never missed a oil-change and plus it is free but the ugli-ness of the car and V8 keeps my away
and save money
Or
take a chance with the A4 and put a grand down on it and buy it for 10,500
the A4 also has 82k miles on it .. idk what I should do

take the thousand, shop a high yield, short term CD or decent money market and invest it for four years. Drive the Marquis and have fun. Not a bad car, rides well and will still sell in four years. if you are right out of high school, stats say you are more accident prone anyway and the marquis will be less to repair if something happens. reward yourself when you exit college with a lower mileage A4 and have more to put down and lower payments. Good luck.
