Coolant mixing with Oil help!

Hello,

I have a 2003 A4 3.0 Quattro and I believe the oil and coolant are starting to mix. :(

I need some ideas how to fix this.

When I remove the oil cap, there is very light brown "sludge" all around the fill opening and on the inside of the cap. When I peeked inside the coolant overflow, it was a nice shade of light brown instead of the pink/green/blue of most cars.

Can someone help me figure out where to start with my B6? It has 169k on the clock.

Usually if oil and coolant are mixing, it's a head gasket issue.

I'm not sure where else to start looking, anyone else have ideas?

I think I'm going to replace the oil cooler and flush the coolant and oil. Hopefully it's a oil cooler gasket failure and not a blown hg.

Talk about a blast from the past! That was over 6 years ago! I replaced the oil cooler... At that point, the car was my son's and he pretty much ruined it with lack of maintenance.. From what I recall, it was a messy job.
