Default drive shaft oil leak

Hi everyone, really need some help please. Saw a small puddle forming under the car a few days ago and went under for a closer look. Please see the photo. I did some searches, but I am quite honestly not sure what to query (I don't know what the specific area that I need help with is called). There seems to be some talk about center support bearings, but I don't think this is it (or is it). If any one has a DIY for this already, please point me in the right direction. I have a good amount of tools and am not afraid to dig in. The problem is that I cannot find a hanes or chilton for this model.

Is this doable on jack stands and are there any "while you're there" items I should be aware of.

Thank you for any help.

BTW, while I was searching for what this problem was, I saw an offer on blauparts.com at the bottom of the page that they will rebuild certain model driveshafts for free. No affiliation, just passing on what I saw.

seems like your output shaft out of the transmission. Is it right in the front by where the cats are?

Hi Dan, it is connected to front part of the car. Not being familiar with this car (let alone a quattro), I assume it is the transmission. The other audi forum that I posted this question on said that it is probably the oil seal on the center diff. This is the link to a DIY that they gave me: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...nsmission+Seal

I just need to find a downloadable repair manual that is less than $100 so I can get the torque specs and the obvious items that may have been left out of the DIY. Can't afford to mess this up-its my DD.

That DIY here not working, but the link they gave you on AZ is fine. Just follow the instructions and is really not that difficult, I believe you are going to have to drain your transmission fluid and refill it.

umm it takes a special tool to refill this trans, cant even check the level without getting the car to a specific temperature. i work on my car too, but i wont touch the trans. the only thing the dealer gets to work on.

its called a front prop shaft seal....

you have to lower the exhaust...

you'll need a Torq T45, a 8mm, a 6mm allen sockets

some sort of hand pump for fluid.

Seal installer.

its not an easy job laying on your back in a driveway.

thank you for the replies. I've read in a couple places that this is also called a transmission output seal. Trying to source locally-no hope yet. Will call Audi dealership monday when they open. Anyone have the audi part number and/or OEM #.

Thank you

forgot to ask a very important question-is this safe to drive? I assume that as long as it is not pouring out, the seal is still keeping most of the fluid in the tranny.

it should be ok as long as there's fluid.
