It's suprising you folks don't know more about your Electronic Stability Program. It's a wonderful system that controls both individual wheel braking and more importantly throttle position. Wheel sensors (ABS) signal computer to cut throttle and send ABS braking to wheel or wheelsthat has lost grip.
From the manufacturer:
"The program uses the anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), the electronic differential lock (EDL) and the traction control (ASR) system, and is permanently active."
The ESP button on the dash changes the program to allowfor less intrusion of the system allowing the driver more freedom (slippage).
When a wheel loses traction or the car starts to slide, the dash light (orange wheel) flashes. When the ESP button is engaged the same light illuminates and stays on until the button is pushed again or the car is turned off at which time the system is reset.

okay u have the esp button u push it while u are driving right, Now the light in the dash will turn onand stay on. u can push the button and the light will turn off but Your esp will not be activated again until u turn the car off and then on again. When ur tires lose traction the light will blink and turn off again. If the light is illuminated at all times u problem need to get ur car scanned. Go to autozone or and autoparts place. Tell them to scan it they will do it for free.

You're right about when a wheel loses traction, that the light blinks. When you disengage the system i.e. press the button on your dash or it stops working, the light stays illuminated in your dash. You've got it backwards in what you wrote.

I wish i could dis-engage my ESP ... I HATE that system ... it messes up my car... When i accelerate it thinks the wheels are slipping and applys the brakes... how can i re-program so the system is off and turns on when i hit the button... Anyone???
