Default When to replace brake pads

Have a 2005 A4 1.8 liter with 55,000. My brakes work well with no squeaking. I currently have about 3/16" to 1/4" left on my rear brake pads. Could some one please tell me when I should replace them?

If they're less than 1/4 of an inch, I'd go ahead and replace them.

I replace mine immediately after they start grinding. A dealership recommended new pads bc mine were below the amount they should have had and they still lasted another 2 years. Glad i declined the repair
