yeah i just had this happen last week took it to my mechanic and we checked the power steering fluid and surely it was almost dry.

I will check my fluid again, but i just filled it a few weeks ago. The low fluid sound I have heard is more of a drone or a whine.

Yeah it sounded like a high pitched remote control car. haha. But I mean it's hard to describe it over the internet so I'm not sure if the OP meant that or not.

its hard to describe. Ive been thinking about posting about it, but I couldnt decide how to describe it.

you are using the right fluid right? make sure you are using the right fluid as using normal auto-zone etc fluid can damage car. http://www.carjunky.com/partstore/?N...08hyoi03a4quau something like that or right from the audi/vw stealer-ship... on average at least 20 bucks for a liter

also if you let it run low you can get air bubbles in your system that will damage pump. overfilling will cause problems as well. the "remote control car" sound is the pump. definatly check your fluid asap. I had a crack on my power steering fluid cooler (little pipe that runs zig-zag in front of radiator) and my fluid was draining from there.

I checked the fluid that day and it seems to be fine..It's not the "remote control car" sound,it's more like a door w/rusty hinges creeping opening but not quite(it really is hard to describe)..
I will check that pipe thats in front of the radiator though..Someone said it could be the bearings but idk if that would be it..

Maybe silicone spray the snot out of your front bushings?? (Don't use WD40.) Rubber could be shrinking in the cold and when the metal moves, they squeal. Also, air bubbles in the P/S fluid may cause noise. I read on the A6 forum to jack up the car and slowly turn lock-to-lock 6-8 times.
