help on noisy B6 heater fan.. 2006 a4 cabriolet 1.8T (which is a b6)

sounds like a bad bearing/bushing in the fan assy. significant rumbling sound on 3 bars (the most common speed), noise goes away at all other speeds.
couple of questions...
1) where is the fan located and how difficult is it to remove?
2) are the bearings/bushings repairable?
