How to get the most power out of the 3.0?! (Engine swap?)
Hey all
I'm brand new to the forums but have had my baby for almost a year now. As most of you probably know, the 3.0 V6 kinda SUCKS with acceleration and power overall. At Waterfest this year my fiance and I were talking with a couple of the local guys about an engine swap for my car (to make it a 1.8t), but it'll indefinitely be a bit pricey. At the moment I have close to no drivetrain/ engine mods but am looking to get the most power out of my car.
My fiance has an 06 MKV GTI with Revo Stage 1 and I am IN LOVE with the power it has! Now I know I'll get no where close to what he has without completely changing the engine & chipping it, but I'd love to hear some suggestions on what mods I could possibly do (aside from the engine swap) to get some more power& speed out of it.
Right now Im a full-time college student so money's a little tight, but whatever I get, I'm known to put it into my car. I already changed my air filter to a K&N (which didn't do all that much), but I'm def ready to start investing big time.
Thanks a bunch in advance! <3
XOXOXO

My understanding is that the only way to get a significant power increase out of the 3.0 V6 is to put a supercharger on it. PES makes one that at least one person here has used. (No idea if the vendor I linked has a good price or is good to deal with - they were just one of the first hits on the google search.)
You won't get too much out of a 3.0, it is very reliable though, keep the maintenance and it will be good to you. If you start modding then one thing leads to another and you know the rest. You can start with a ECU flash and maybe a K&N filter, that's probably the best as the Stratmosphere has almost no advantage over the K&N but just looks. You can't put cams on it because of they're auto adjustable. You could go with the supercharger route but then your internals will start to suffer and sooner than you know it you will have some oil leaks or oil burning rings. It's up to you, I would just keep the 3.0 the way it is as it is more equipped than any 1.8T on that year, except the Ultrasport.

My 3.0 has been really good to me for the past year I've had it, and I'm always sure to keep on top of all the maintenance. I added a K&N drop in filter a couple of months ago and it's helped a little bit. As far as ECU flashing, is there a specific program you'd recommend over the rest? I've heard mixed reviews, but most of them have been with turbos so it's not really comparable. It's nice to know that the 3.0 is pretty reliable though, I'm hoping to keep this car for a long time & it only has about 65k miles on it. Thanks for all your input, it's helped A LOT!
I don't know about the flashing, is hard to get a consistent answer you know, I also heard mixed reviews, I heard about APR making a tune for it but I just remember the name because it's easy to remember.
I'm going to do some looking around regarding flashing. I want to actually go with something that will be worth it.Thank you again! XOX
The 1.8T is a strong motor but the 3.0 is more then most know.
for most the 3.0 is an abandoned car. There seems to be a new list of mods. check out this video. There is part one over there as well.
Take 2 1.8T stage2 Vs. jhm 3.0 Stage2
Ill let you know more about the JHM flash if your interested in a few days as a local guy has a new JHM tune

I bought a 2003 A4 3.0 MT6 for my daughter and it's been a pretty reliable car, currently at 86k miles. One thing I ran into was bad cat converters that were replaced under warranty at 79k miles. Since the warranty ends at 80k, I count myself lucky. Something you should be aware of. BTW, a K&N did nothing for performance or mileage on my 2.7T but I have not had to buy an air filter since 2005. There are no cheap performance upgrades for the 3.0. Just enjoy it.
