Default No power

Hi there

I'm hoping somebody can help with this, i dont know whats going on with the car.

I have a 2002 A4 1.9tdi 130 which intermittantly loses all power, it can happen from start or on the move.
When it happens the ESP light comes on and the Glow plug light flashes, i think its going into limp home mode? (Cant get over 1000 rpm). Restarting the car clears the fault, but it can take a good few restarts.
I bought a VAG cable on ebay and all it tells me is the following:

17664 - Engine coolant temp sensor - (G62) open or short to +
P1256 Intermittent

Could this error cause this? and is it easy to replace? or should i be looking at something else?

Thanks in advance...

the coolant temp sensor is located in the rear of the engine. U might also have a vac leak but if u did it should have come up in the scan.

Changing the temp sensor hasnt fixed the fault, Vag Com also shows up an open circuit on a brake light switch, could that cause the fault?

Yes - I have same issue (Limp mode), My problem is MAF sensor or N75 valve but I've read threads where the brake light problem has caused 'limp home mode' aswell.

Apparently if the car thinks it's braking and accelerating at the same time it'll throw a strop and cut the throttle.
Changed the Brake Light Switch tonight so only time will tell, it hasn't gone into limp mode yet in the short time I've driven it tonight so fingers crossed.

Hey Im getting this problem too and have had car back to garage (Non Audi Dealer) on numerous occassions. Failed to find fault most times but on one visit found fault linked to throttle housing, changed it but happened again about 3 weeks later. Seems to happen with me in wet or blustery conditions. Dont have cable or fancy leads etc so in the dark a bit bout this problem. Would appreciate any feedback from yourselves if issue is resolved with your actions.

Thumbs up No power (Limp mode) in wet conditions?

My limp mode saga continued for 2 months. If you're encouintering limp mode and have a damp footwell carpet this maybe worth a read. After changing a few parts and the problem re-occuring intermittently I deduced it only went into limp-mode in wet conditions. (No sh=t Sherlock)

Turned out a replacement wiper motor fitted months before required the ECU unit to be unscrewed and moved back a few inches to allow the wiper motor to be removed and replaced. Moving the ECU had dislodged the rubber gasket beneath the ECU unit. It's almost impossible to see.

This misplaced rubber trim allowed the elements in. Rain water from the windscreen was washed down through the drainage chamber at the rear of the engine around the battery bay, through the gap under the ECU, down the throttle cables to the throttle sensor, throttle assembly etc. This caused circuits to short out, throw up 'COIL' and 'ESP' alarm and car went into limp mode or often totally lost all power.

3 trips to Audi and no joy, and finally 3rd AA man felt water coming down the throttle cables as it was raining while he inspected car.

I removed ecu unit using a torque set, felt under the ecu and pushed rubber gasket back up into the 10mm edge gap around the whole underside of the ecu. When the ecu is refitted the rubber acts as a water tight seal.

You can see better (But not reach) if you remove dash board cowl under steering wheel and shine torch up to the right where the ecu is.

One rubber seal, thousand pounds, mis-spent thank you sir.

Ouch, that's a painful 1000 pound lesson.

Glad you got it resolved, though.
