Default problems with cooling system "please read"

hello,
i have a 2003a4 1.8t, i purchased this car about five months ago. it currently has 65000 miles and the car was always maintained my the audi dealer. well yeterday i was driving and i decided to pass a guy infront of me, so i accelerated and passed him. well about three seconds after the engine started to overheat, and passed the 3/4 mart. i then brought it to a shop that supposedly works on audis, bmw's ects. and ended up getting the thermostat changed, later that day i was told that it didnt do anything. he is next proposing to check if the head gasket was blone, and if not he is resorting to changing the water pump. is this a common problem with these cars? please im extremely confused on what to do, i feel that he may evn be taking me for a ride.

Original water pump had a plastic impeller so they can break. If they do the pump make sure they do the timing belt too.
