Default Transmission Range Sensor or TCM.. URGENT HELP REQUIRED!

Hey all,

I bought an audi a4 touchtronic 2ltr (2001) and when driving at random the car jumps into limp mode and out of gear.. I can rev it like mad it wont go very far (i dont).. when i manually select first gear it takes a moment, sometimes if its being particularly buggy I have to slap it into reverse pull backwards then and only then put it into drive and away i go (sometimes).. Anyway saying my Audi has an electrical fault is like searching for needle in a digital haystack.. So ive done the clever thing and paid someone to diagnose my car....

I have an error and it is as follows...

17090- Transmission Range Sensor (F125) Implausible Signal P0706 Intermittent..

Thing is I was very happy to hear this, wicked news surely.. Just a sensor... but when my mechanic called Audi, they didnt know what this sensor was?? and that it is infact the TCM.... Now why on earth would my Audi Diagnose something that doesnt exist on the car? IS the mechanic trying to pull a fast one? he said with installation/ oils/ gaskets etc its gonna be 1500 sterling...

Ive looked up online and some people are saying tcm others sensors... I havent a clue, I dont want to replace a tcm if its a bloody sensor, on a similar scale i dont want to waste money on a sensor if the tcm is bust.. I hope there is some audi owner who has had the same bs as me and is willing to share a potential resolve...

Out of a car... Out of a job, its really that urgent guys, any ideas please take the time to write..

Thanks is advance

Im sorry to hear about this.
I am in some what the same kind of problem as you are in.
However my car drives fine, No Limp mode, No gear change issue.

I called audi, they told me the same thing, its the TCM, I went to an audi spicalist they said TCM.
The dealer and some forums say sensor issue.

However the error code i have is different from yours.

It is very costly to replace the TCM, almost £1400 (approx $3000)

Hi there, I have done much digging and decided to go to a reliable transmission specialist as suggest by a true blue (one of few) mechanics.. Anyway the guy took one look at the car and said its the tcm, not only that but he showed me where the sensor was and it is attached to the tcm... the cheapest I could get was £1100 from him.. He had 3 audi a4's in with the same problem, showed me the part and then said 'if you can obtain the code then you can purchase it from ebay for much less and we will install it for under 300..' You can get it for around the same price.. So all those who are experiencing troubles fear not (too much).. it doesnt have to be as bad as Audi make out, Now onto my next question, how difficult would it be for me to read the serial on the TCM?

Hey I know I'm really late on this post but I just bought a 2003 audi a4 and it is have the same problems. The PNRD light is always on in the dashboard and when starting the car takes awhile to drive. Another problem when I drive it is randomly jumps and sometimes loses the gear I believe and I have to park or press the break button to keep driving . The code I found when I took it to a mechanic was P 07 06 Transmission Range sensor a circuit range/Performance . Some tell me it's a sensor and others say TCM . If there is any advice that you guys found or information it would be greatly appreciated

Default This is really late...

I know this is very late but I think I can answer you question. The reason is because this model and other Audi models range sensor is part of the TCM itself. Why the Audi mechanic didn't know this beats me.

Also if you car is under 100,000 miles and less than 10 years old you fall under the car's recall period and will have the TCM replaced for free. At least in USA there was a recall for the TCM.

I have read that if its the TCM computer ( & even the brake computer ) its often just a bad connection inside the unit, either cold dry soldering connections, broken connection wires or chip legs that have broken off or bad soldering to them.
