slave cylinder install--2003 a4 1.8t

I have been putting the slave cylinder back on and CANNOT get it compressed enough to have the hold down bolt go into the transmission. The question is if i pull the hydraulic line so that I dont have to compress the hydraulics, will it be easier to install (and yes, then I will have to bleed it). Aother way to look at it is, does the slave cylinder have an internal spring that forces the piston out??
