Starter Not Engaging

Hey all its been a while since i've posted up on here but this morning when i went to go to work.. i couldn't start my 02 A4 1.8tqm.. I heard the starter turning but not engaging..

My question: do i just need to replace the starter or is there anything else i have to do with it? i have 95000 on the clock. any one know how much a new starter is?

any help would be great.. getting to work by train and bus is a bit**

On a normal car you would be able to just replace the solenoid. I'm not sure if that's possible on these. Call a parts store and see if they will sell you just the solenoid.

i hear the starter turning though.. it seems its just not engaging the flywheel..

The solenoid is what kicks the gear of the starter out to contact the flywheel.

ahh gotcha.. thank you....

do u know where the starter solenoid is btw?

My guess would be that the starter needs to be replaced. Unless there is a possibility that your flywheel is chipped and the starter is just missing it. One way to test this would be to push the car (while in gear) a foot or two, they try to start the car again and see if anything changes.

I don't think you are able to buy just the solenoid.

i'll give that a shot when i get home today and let u know.. i just got off the phone with the stealership.. a new start $345.. get the Fu** outta here

The solenoid would be a cylindrical thing bolted onto the starter. Generally, a starter looks like one item made up of two cylindrical objects. The solenoid would be the smaller of the two, and is what the wires of the starter connect to.

Good thought on the chipped flywheel, but drum you'd better hope it's the starter!
