hey guys,

so more issues...when i hit 55 mph my steering wheel shakes, it goes away when i hit 60...

and it seems to go away at every speed once the car is warm...

im thinking it might be a slightly warped rotor as i've noticed stopping hard from high speed i get a little shake. does this sound reasonable?

any other ideas?

 

if it happens when braking it could be your rotor. otherwise its probly a wheel balance issue. other less likely issues are cv axle or tie rod ends

 

If it shakes when you stop ONLY, then its a warped rotor. But you say that it does it when your on your way to 60 from 55 so its probably an unbalanced wheel or a slight unalignment, those can be hard to detect if they're off by a tad bit.

 

its weird, it actually goes away. Today i was driving away from work on the road i notice it most often on and it didn't do it and i went between 55 and 60.

How much are wheel bearings on these bad boys??

 

before you buy anything, take a look at the cv boots and check if they are ripped. its free to do and if they are ripped theres your problem, if not, then thats one thing you can rule out. if that checks out good then drive it and try to make it vibrate. try it around a left corner, then a right corner. then try it while your accelerating, coasting, and braking. if it vibrates during a certian thing, but not another then repost and go from there. its pointless to buy a part that you "think" will fix it, when it might not. good luck finding the problem. keep us posted

 

it does it while coasting and accellerating (sp?) i haven't been able to do long curve at 55 mph but it does it when i steer left and right inside my lane.

i'll check the cv boots but i literally just got back from the shop two weeks ago and they did a really good search and found a lot of stuff wrong...nothing that really seemed related to the steering but i doubt they missed a torn boot.

again it seems to only do it between like 55mph and 60mph and it does not happen all the time i.e. every time i go between 55 and 60...wierd huh.

 

Seen alot of views on this but little replies for what it's worth I'll throw in my 2cents. Have You Checked your:

Tires? Lots of things can cause a harmonic vibration, feathered tires would definitely leave you feeling a vibration in the steering wheel if its mounted up front. Sometimes you would feel it at all speeds other times at certain speeds alone. Also depending on the degree of severity, a feathered tire once warmed from driving could become soft enough so that you would no longer notice a vibration.

Wheel balance? Same thing...a vibration that will can be felt at all speeds or just certain speeds depending on the degree of out of balance. Also you said the car was just in the shop, possibly there was some debris betweent the wheel hub and the the wheel when they reinstalled? The smallest bit of sh@t between the wheel and the hub could cause a vibration.

Wheel bearings? I would expect you should be able to hear a wheel bearing going out but for whatever reason i.e. exhaust, turbo what not maybe its cancelling the sound out.

Strut? Any signs of strut failure,excessive oil around the cylinder?

Just some ideas off the cuff, saw 90 some people have read your post but only a few responded. Maybe this helps maybe it won't. Hope that it does. Good luck!

would i be able to see feathering on the tires? to be honest i've only heard the term a couples but never seen it.
