Default System too lean questions

I got my CEL read and it has 2 codes, P0171 and P0174 which code for system too lean bank 1 and system too lean bank 2 respectively. My first question is what does that mean and my second question is what are the odds of both banks being "too lean"? Could my problem be before the banks split apart?

I have a 2002 3.0 A4 quattro.

It means there is either a large vaccum leak, maybe near the brake booster. You should be able to hear a large hissing noise around the engine if this is the case.
Or your MAF sensor is faulty.
