I am having trouble with my car having a really rough idle (no misses or anything like that). The car is much worse on days that its cold. I guy at a tech shop that has worked on alot of audis recommended that i drain the oil from the turbo i believe he said. He told me that it can build up especially it it has never been drained before and back up into the engine. He told me to crawl underneath the hood and on the passanger side there would be a hose at the lowest point in the system where the oil tends to start pooling and their I could undo the hose and let it drain off. So today I thought i would give it a try and I can't find what he was talking about. All i see that is even remotely related to the turbo is the metal tube oil return from the turbo going straight into the oil pan. Is this what he is talking about? I need help? I may have misunderstood him and he may have meant draining the oil from the intercooler if thats even possible. Thanks so much. Can anyone give me some how toos on this because I believe that I am at the beginning stages of this "oil" building up.

 

I don't think that was what he was talking about. If you think about it, if it were being caused by the oil backing up in the return line, the oil would actually be backing up into the turbo and not the engine. If this were the case you would have a lot bigger problems than a rough idle. I'm not sure which line he was talking about, but when he says drain the oil from the turbo the return line would make sense. But again if you look at it practically it doesn't work. Maybe you should just take it back to him, have him crawl under the car himself and point out exactly which line he is talking about.

 

yea i agree and that is really why i am confused. One else think it could be the oil from the intercooler then? The problem is that he told me this over the phone. I am going to call him back tomorrow to ask more details. Thanks for the reply keep 'em comin

 

I don't know if its just me, but I don't see any way that oil being in the turbo would cause problems.. And why would you have to drain the turbo? Doesn't it constitantly recirculate with the oil in the motor??

 

Yes it does and it drains back into the pan after you turn the car off.

 

ok so i'm a lunitic because i talked to the guy that has worked on audis alot today. To me this makes alot more sense. He told me that its the intercooler instead of the turbo. he said that at the lowest point oil tends to pool. He said you can drain it off at the 2 in tube. at the very bottom. I'm going to yank it off tomorrow and see what happens. Lets hope my car will still run.

 

There isn't a problem with oil being in the turbo if it's not in excessive amounts. What I was referring to was excess oil pooling in the turbo causing a lot of unwanted stress.

 

Correct. Because of the crank case breather that is stock on the car, it allows the oil vapor from the crank case to get sucked into the turbo inlet hose. That then collects in the IC pipe which then blocks up the SMIC or FMIC causing less air to flow thru it. This is why people install catch can setups on their cars.
