Default 2.0t vs. 3.2

Hello, all - newbie here.

I'm looking into a purchase of a quattro Avant, and doing some homework. I see a lot of comments, suggested PM, and unfortunate events posted here regarding the 2.0t. How does the 3.2 fare? Would it be a more reliable machine? Does it have it's own gremlins?

Thanks, all!

Yes, the 3.2 seems to have its little gremlins as well, but on the whole, I think it's regarded as more reliable than the 2.0T. However, the 3.2 has almost NO aftermarket, so there's no tuning options. Also, once you smooth out a few trouble areas on the 2.0T (DV, PCV, possibly the cam follower), it's fairly reliable as well. I've got a 2.0T quattro and have had less trouble with the engine itself and more with little things around it (thermostat, engine mount, window switch, trunk latch).

So, it's really a personal preference. If you don't expect to ever want to do any aftermarket mods/tuning, you'd probably be fine with the 3.2. There will be a lot more selection in available used cars, though, if you shop the 2.0T. Just be sure you get a manual or the quattro if you want a real transmission. The "auto" FWD 2.0Ts all came with a CVT transmission.

Have an'07 Avant with the 2.0T,Quattro,manual and have done the basics that the stickies
suggest.Have not had a problem, knock on wood.I believe you will enjoy the 2.0 more than
the 3.2 as you drive PAST gas stations instead of stopping at them. And the performance is hands down better.Read the stickies for ALL the necessary info, well worth it!!

Thanks for the replies! Most of the PM tips in the stickies are within my skillset. (Time opportunities seem to have diminished...)

Have a great holiday, folks!
