Default 2007 A4 - Diverter Valve cause smoke?

I have noticed a couple of times when accelerating onto interstate there is a sudden smell of exhaust and maybe some black smoke. Nothing what I would call drastic, but only last for a couple of minutes. There were no codes activated. This seems to be random. I can apply heavy throttle at other times and there is no issue. Could this be an issue with the diverter valve not operating properly? Any ideas appreciated!

nope I think you're fine. Over time soot will build up in the turbo or exhaust and wherever else it builds up, then when you hammer on the throttle it clears its throat so to speak. It's a good thing.

It just don't seem normal though and I'm not sure how that smell gets in the interior so strongly.

I glazed right over the smell of it inside, sorry. Does it smell like burnt oil? Are you seeing black smoke inside the car or just outside? The smell of oil, maybe burnt oil could indicate you have an oil leak that's leaking onto the exhaust, maybe the valve cover or something else leaking onto the exhaust. Take a look at your engine for leaks of any sort.

Yes, it has the burnt oil smell in the interior, but no smoke. The only time I see smoke is from the tailpipe and I only see that briefly when under moderate to heavy acceleration. If it was a leak then I would think that I would get the smell more often. It doesn't happen that often, but when it does it is really noticeable. Very strange.
