Default Does a worn out cam follower and cam send metal shrapnel through engine?

I'm looking at a B7 that had its cam/cam follower/cam/HPFP replaced at 98k by Audi dealer. This seems great as it avoid any issues for me down the road? But if it got worn so badly that the cam had to be replaced, wouldn't that have sent metal flakes through the engine potentially messing up other things?

Really want to join the B7 club here, coming from a B3 20V

Let me know if you think I should be concerned or be confident in buying this.

From what I understand of the issue (never had it happen to me), any of the large pieces should have been caught by the oil filter/oil screen and anything smaller shouldn't cause issues. I wouldn't balk at buying one that way as long as I had a competent mechanic give it a thorough PPI. If it happened a couple miles ago, you might have cause for concern, but if it was done 10k+ miles ago, I wouldn't worry too much.

Make sure you check the cam follower every 20-30k miles (depending on your comfort level with it) from here on out though. Audi won't cover it again. Good luck with your search!

Thank you for the reply. I'll look into how long ago it was done and make sure I get a good PPI done.
