MMI Display dead, should i replace or upgrade?
This is a bit different than the other threads I saw related to this, so I figured I'd just start a new one, please don't hate me.
The 7 inch TFT display in my 07 a4 finally died. For a while it wouldnt come on for a while and after driving for a little bit it came back on. All the buttons on the head unit work just fine. I saw that many people said it was prone to over heating and when it finally cooled down itll be fine, and for a while it did. But now the display is completely dead.
The replacement screen is $170 if i remember correctly n seems very simple to replace. However, i waa meaning to add a smartphone/mp3 player hookup because the 2gb sd cards are useless to me and i domt use the 6 disc changer. The one i intended on getting was $130 and it has a rca n usb hook up so you can also charge your phone. It can be custom installed, but takes a little hit of work. So i would be looking at $300+ tax and the time it woukd take install it all...
Would it be easier to just add a newer mmi system, unit n display with the features i want(havent looked into that yet admittadly) or get an after market indash unit? I know its all tied in to the dash board so theres probably more there to hook up than my brotgers neon haha.
Fyi* im an electronic technician so figuring out the wiring wouldnt be too difficukt, especially if i had a diagram. Im more worried about what kind of after market unit i woukd need to interface with audis systems and whether or not tgis is something i coukd do reasonably on my own.
Thank for the help guys!

I don't know that you're going to save a lot going with a whole new head unit. I just paid $220 for the Clarion CX-501 (a decent, double-din, BT capable HU) for our other vehicle. Tack on another $60-80 for the adapter to make your steering wheel controls work and you still have to install it. Personally, I like the look of the factory stereos in the Audis and without significant custom work, an aftermarket HU may look a little off.
My vote would be to fix the screen and get an add on adapter (I assume it's a little box like the DICE i-Audi or PIE modules).
