need oil change, what type of filter???

im getting an oil change on my 08 a4 2.0TQ and need to know what filter to get. i have seen different types from random autoparts websites but dont know what/who to trust. i thought that only the 'paper' filter would fit (http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B7_A4-.../Tools/ES5135/ ) but iv seen that fram and bosch and others make traditional canister filters that are supposed to fit (http://www.drivewire.com/vehicle/audi-a4/oil-filter/ )

the first oil change was done by valvoline with the 'paper' filter but if anyone can please specify what type is required and recommend some brands it would help a ton

thanks
david

upon further research (reading the fine print) i seem to have answered my question. :o

it looks like audi changed the filter type used in 08, can anyone confirm this?

MANN. it's the OEM filter.

I found this mechanic near my work (Master automotive, santa clara, Bay Area),
specializes in Audi/BMW/Merc. Saw some good reviews on the net, does oil change,
etc. for much less than the dealer, and very convenient.
Said he uses Mann filter, and OEM oil.

1. You guys know what 5w-40 oil Audi dealers use?
Thought Castrol, or is it Valvoline?
2. And he has a "German oil" for $1 more. Any idea what
it is?

I'm pretty sure it's Valvoline at the dealer shops.

I just changed mine last night, and with 5 quarts of the Valvoline Sythetic, they gave me a free filter at Advance Auto Parts. The promo was for a K&N filter, but he didn't have that so they gave me a Mobil1 filter instead. I had already purchased an OEM filter from dealer, so I am saving the Mobil1 for a rainy day. Speak up if I should trash it.

ecstuning.com should have whatever you need to do your own oil change.
(man i love that site :) )

but as far as having a dealer/shop do it, Mann is the OEM filter brand, at least for my B7. also make sure he knows what year/model your car is since audi changed the type of filter they used. earlier models have the metal canister filters and the b7's have the removable paper filters. and the oil is personal preference as long as its the right weight and full synthetic. your owners manual should have some VW/audi genuine parts number but if you check out the above site you can find all kinds of oils that meet the standards. or check out the local american brands and they should be fine too. i have mobile1 full synthetic in mine now and it is fine. no leaks or burn off that i know of

I looked up the part no for the oil change once, and it indicated Castrol 5W40.

ilackav8 04-16-2010 12:25 PM

yeah castrol is what they use/sell at the dealers

SlackJaw 04-16-2010 01:20 PM

yeh, I'm pretty sure you guys are right ...it used to be Valvoline though, at least when I lived in Atlanta anyway :idk:
