Really helps to know what engine you have. If you either have the 2.0T or 3.2L its equally difficult. I wouldn't say its hard, but more difficult than a honda or chevy. The 2.0T oil filter is under the coolant tank assembly and its a canister filter, meaning it doesn't screw on like a traditional filter. Unscrew the housing as you would an oil filter and pull out the filter. Install a new O-ring inside the inner lip of the oil filter housing and install in reverse order. The rest is self explainitory. The 3.2L also uses a canister filter, but its on top of the engine under the engine cover with the rings on it. Pull that up and you will see the filter. Use the same method as the 2.0T.

easy. audi filter (of course) and castrol 5-40 syn. oil (also of course). change every 5-6k.
use audi "oil drain tool" for easy and mess free oil filter draining. and you can also use "oil extractor", this way you dont even need to get under the car since everything is done from the top.

sorry, i have 2008 a4 with the 2.0T. i took it to valvoline for an oil change and watched them do it and noticed the oil filter was different like you said.

kolyan- can you get an audi approved filter at autozone or oriellys? what is the oil drain tool? and is the oil extractor the pump thing that sucks the oil out through the dipstick tube?

i dont think autozone sells filters for our cars. better of getting one at the dealer or online. you are correct about oil extractor. I have used them on my BMW M3 and now on my A4 2.0T and it works just fine. here are few links:

ps. you dont need drain tool. its just when you open oil filter, all oil inside will drain on your car and on your hands, that tool is used to avoid that.

You can buy an oil filter from Autozone. You don't have to buy filters from the dealer. Fram makes a filter that works for our cars. It is manufactured in Germany exactly like the OEM ones, and it looks exactly the same.

Make sure that you are using the correct oil in the car. All oils need to be VW 502 00 approved.
