Steering Clunk

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed and had a clunk in their steering repaired? Whenever I'm turning starting from a stop or at slow parking lot speed, I get a noise (cross between pop and clunk) when the wheel is turned quite a bit to the right but no where near hard over. Happens exactly at the same place every time. Interestingly if you go past that and let the wheel come back to center, it doesn't happen. Quiet as can be if turning to the left. My old Jetta had a bad strut tower bearing, and made a bunch of popping sounds when turning the wheel either direction. Unfortunately there are lots of things it might be. Just looking for possible ideas.

Thanks,
B7Night

I'm going to bump this post up to the first page. I have this same clunk or pop that you are describing. I can't feel it but I hear it. Have you come up with anything by chance?

Nothing yet. I was planning on taking it to the shop sooner or later. Unfortunatly I got rearended quite hard last week, and now have to get the the bumper fixed so the noise kinda got put on the back burner for the time being.

Hey guys, new to the forum. My 2007 B7 has the same thing, only when turning left and it comes from the right wheel. I'm guessing from a preliminary search and inspection of my car that it's a worn tie rod end, so my plan of attack is to start there. I figure it's a $40 part that will need replacing anyway, so it makes sense. I'll report my results when I've made the swap.

Oop, sorry I misspoke. I mean sway bar end link. That's what I'm guessing.

On a front wheel drive that can be an indication of a CV joint stating to wear out. Not sure about with Audi.

Possibly, but I've been in cars with bad CV joints, but this sound is not the same. As for the sway bar, I had a loose swaybar on my Jetta, and it also made a different sound. I'm going to get the car in for service in a few months for the timing belt, so if I don't get it looked at before then, I'll have it checked out then.

Guys, CHECK YOUR MOTOR MOUNTS!! They're hydraulic and they leak magenta hydraulic fluid. Mine is leaking on the same side the clunk is coming from and another guy posted that when his was shot he also experienced a "clunking" sound from that side. I'm replacing mine this week and I'll let you all know what the result is, but I have strong feelings that the mount is the problem. My sway bars, control arms, and everything else look perfect, no cracks in the rubber, no play in the ends, no nothing!

Interesting...I'll be curious as to your results.

Well the steering clunk went away. It's been doing it since 75,000 miles. I just had my car in for the cam follower (aka new head), and the timing belt at 108,500, and what ever was done, the noise went away. I'm not sure what it was, but since so much of engine compartment was torn apart, the offending part must have been corrected.
