The breather, or also commonly called the PCV or oil separator, allows the crankcase to expel air without losing any oil. This system is designed to give gases a way to escape in a controlled manner from the crankcase.

It is critical that the parts of the PCV system be kept clean and open; otherwise airflow will be insufficient. A plugged or malfunctioning PCV system will eventually damage an engine.
