Default I need halp with pricing

I am in the process of buying a new A4 and it is getting me down. I am ready to buy, I just want to make sure I am getting a reasonable deal. Doesn't have to be the best ever, just a reasonable slightly above average deal. I tried the approach of being up front with my sales guy that I was looking for a good deal, but wasn't interested in killing him, I thought this might produce a decent offer, but it seems not to have. There is zero urgency in my buying this car, but I would ink a deal today if it were good enough.

The main problem I am having is understanding what is a reasonable price. I keep hearing under invoice amounts, and others saying $800 over invoice, $1000 over invoice. Get free Audicare, walk if they don't throw in the mats for free...

My head is spinning. When I go to the various websites there is some variance there as well. My current top is based on Zag which seems like it should at the very least be a decent price, but not a fantastic one. My dealer is not even close to that yet!

If I could get a reasonable understanding of what people had paid, where and when (how much over/under inv) then maybe I could take a more aggressive approach.

I am looking at a pretty standard spec car, the dealer doesn't have one on the lot but said there are multiples in the region.

Walnut Wood

Any other advice is welcome as well.

Thanks

ZAG is usually pretty low. I got my 09 sales contract for 28,554, which is about $4,943 off invoice. I've learnt from my very first car-buying experience to never buy the new model year. I suggest you do the same and go for an 09 instead.

Deal directly with the manager at the dealership. The make no commission so you save some hundreds right off the bat.

I paid $40,201 for a 2010 Prestige, metallic paint, manual, light ash wood and dest charge. List was $42,750, invoice $39,817 (according to edmunds).

So that would put me $384 over invoice.
